CYBER BLOG
One of the challenges of fully protecting your business from cyber threats is the fact that everyone needs to be on board with the strategy. However, the topic is difficult for some to grasp, because it’s just not something they deal with on a daily basis. Many of your employees likely don’t have a basic understanding of cyber security terms.
There is jargon used in every industry. Anyone who works for the government knows that speaking in acronyms is common and lawyers have their “legalese.” The cyber world is no different – security terms sound like a foreign language to most individuals. How can you get everyone to understand cyber security terms to help your organization avoid a breach?
Jargon 101
Part of the challenge of cyber security terms is that they’re actually buzzwords, making them even more difficult for the layman to understand. Consider the following, basic terms for a cyber security specialist or someone in IT:
- BYOD
- DDoS
- IoT
- Zero-day attacks
- Phishing
- VPN
- Keylogger
- FIDO
- SECaaS
If you put those terms in front of someone in accounting or human resources, they may have heard a few of them, especially phishing and VPN, but that might be the extent of it. The truth is, it is critical to do a better job of explaining cyber security terms to everyone across the board, because your company’s data doesn’t need to be at risk any more than it already is.
Educate and Re-educate
Every high-functioning organization takes education seriously, and it’s something employees are continually asking for so they can advance in their career. Yet they aren’t likely asking for a course on cyber security terms even though there are key terms for them to understand so that your organization can be protected from a breach. Two of those terms, spam and phishing, are the Trojan horse for companies that have been infiltrated with a virus that compromises their system and puts their data at risk. Anyone with access to your network needs to be educated on what spam and phishing are, and you should have a policy in place regarding clicking on any links found in emails.
Below is a list of some of the most crucial terms that all employees should be familiar with in today’s increasingly digitized world, so start your education component by covering these:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Encryption
- Internet of Things
- BYOD
- Encryption
- Risk assessment
- Cloud computing
- DDoS
- Data breach
- Malware
- Insider threat
Offer examples of each and run through real-world scenarios where these terms have been a crucial part of an attack. When you put a “face to a name,” so to speak, even the least tech savvy people on your team will understand the terms better.
Don’t put your company at risk; you need a solution that specializes in cyber security so you can identify your weak areas and discover the tools that will keep you safe while reducing the risk of having your data compromised.
